Companion Animals Lifetime RegistrationLast modified: January 16, 2007 - 3:00 PM
The Companion Animals Act and Lifetime Registration. The Companion Animals Act and Lifetime Registration for both cats and dogs was first introduced in 1999 and has now fully replaced the old system of annual dog registration under the previous Dog Act. If you are the owner of a cat born after June 1999 or a dog of any age (working dogs exempt) then you must have your animal microchipped and registered. This is a two step process with microchipping carried out by your local veterinarian and then registration at Council offices in Dowling Street, Dungog. Once your animal is registered, if lost, it can be identified anywhere in NSW through the Companion Animals Register. The cost of microchipping is generally around $40.00. Registration fees are a one off fee and are currently set at:
The Companion Animals Act also introduced a range of new penalties for offences including:
There is currently only one lead free area in the Shire at Frank Robinson Park in Dungog where owners can exercise their dogs off a lead. Council PoundCouncil operates a companion animal pound facility. If you have lost your cat or dog call Council on 4995 7777 or the pound directly on 4996 5528. All animals must be microchipped, registered and impounding fees paid before they can be released from the pound. Ranger ServicesCouncil contracts ranger services from Port Stephens Council. These rangers are fully equipped and trained to carry out all companion animal, impounding, parking, waste and environmental services on a one day a week basis. Further information on Companion Animals can be accessed through the Companion Animals link on the Department of Local Government website. Contact details | |||||||||
