Soft Plastics Recycling coming soon!

Published on 26 February 2026

Great news for our community! Dungog Shire Council has partnered with ReSmart to make it easier for residents to recycle soft plastics locally.

From 1 March 2026, Council’s partnership with ReSmart officially begins. Residents can continue dropping off their soft plastics for free at the Dungog Waste Management Facility on Short Street. All collected soft plastics will be properly processed and repurposed through this new program.

What are soft plastics?

Soft plastics are any plastics that can be scrunched into a ball and stay in a ball. This includes items like plastic bags, bread bags, chip packets and food wrappers.

Before dropping them off, please make sure items are:

  • Reasonably clean

  • Dry

  • Free from food residue

Both clear and mixed-coloured soft plastics are accepted.

Why recycle soft plastics?

Soft plastics can’t go in your yellow recycling bin, so they often end up in landfill. By recycling them through this program, we can:

  • Reduce the amount of waste going to landfill

  • Lower environmental impact

  • Give plastics a second life by turning them into new products

  • Support more sustainable waste practices in our region

Once collected, the materials are processed through ReSmart’s recycling partners and repurposed into useful new products such as oil or additive for asphalt, helping close the loop on plastic waste.

This initiative is part of Council’s ongoing commitment to improving waste management and supporting a more sustainable future for Dungog Shire.
